Specializing in Integrated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention
In individual therapy, I use research-based methods to help adults who are struggling with OCD, anxiety, depression, stress, rumination, and a range of other mental health challenges. My approach primarily integrates:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which explores how our thoughts affect our emotions;
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for anxiety and OCD, and;
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which provides a framework for unhooking from unhelpful thoughts and feelings, and learning how to accept certain things we cannot change while clarifying our core values.
For couples, I primarily apply the Gottman method, and have completed Level III training.
Before I became a therapist, I was a practicing lawyer for 17 years. That experience informs my work with individuals and couples as we give voice to each person's inner advocate and, often, a more compelling or more accurate narrative of their lives.
My style is engaged, gentle, and also directive. Your therapy is guided by your own goals, but in sessions you will find that I am interactive and responsive. I will always listen and will sit with you in your experience. There will also be a dynamic exchange of ideas, and what therapists call "psychoeducation," which means that you will learn about how your brain works and skills for managing challenges where it really counts: outside of therapy, in your daily life.
We will often begin by assessing your core values: what matters to you, what do you want your life to be about? If that is a difficult question, we have an excellent place to start. Next, we will identify barriers in your way before we methodically dismantle them in the context of a safe, supportive, and judgment-free relationship.
I see clients through two practices in New York. At the Center for Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy, I see clients either in person in Midtown Manhattan, or virtually, online, whichever is your preference. And at Mindful Psychological Services, based in New York and New Jersey, I see clients virtually.
I currently hold a limited permit to provide mental health counseling in the State of New York (MHC-LP #P127067) and I am a Licensed Associate Counselor in New Jersey (LAC #37AC00841500). My clinical work at the Center is supervised by Clinical Director Dr. Steven Phillipson, a licensed psychologist and world-renowned specialist in the treatment of OCD, with more than 30 years' experience in the field. My work at Mindful Psychological Services PLLC is supervised by Dr. Melissa Jermann, a licensed psychologist and specialist in the treatment of OCD, anxiety, trauma, and PTSD.
